The Howard Gardner School Website Redesign & Development
Reimagining What a School Website Can Be
Most school websites are built around administration rather than experience. The Howard Gardner School wanted something entirely different, a modern, story-driven digital experience that reflected the school’s adventurous, exploratory, and inclusive culture.
The result was an immersive website designed to feel more like a journey than a traditional school site.

The Challenge
The previous website for The Howard Gardner School followed a more traditional school website structure and visual style that did not reflect the creativity, energy, or experiential learning philosophy behind the HGS experience. The school needed a modern, visually engaging website that would differentiate it from other local schools, appeal to families seeking a more progressive approach to education, and encourage direct conversations through calls, emails, and campus visits, all while remaining simple and low maintenance for staff to manage.
At the center of the vision was one core idea: learning happens everywhere, not just in classrooms.

The Strategy
Rather than building a conventional multi-page school website, we created a single-scroll, story-driven digital experience designed to guide visitors naturally through the culture and philosophy of HGS. Through motion, visual storytelling, and immersive interactions, the site emphasizes exploration, curiosity, and student experience without relying on information-heavy pages or traditional academic structures.
The user journey was intentionally simplified to keep the focus on discovery while encouraging prospective families to reach out directly to learn more or schedule a campus visit.
Platform Recommendation
Webflow
After reviewing the project goals, animation requirements, and long-term maintenance needs, we recommended building the site in Webflow. The platform allowed us to create a highly interactive, visually dynamic experience while maintaining strong performance, responsive flexibility, and a lightweight backend that would remain easy for staff to manage internally.

Creative Direction
The creative direction for The Howard Gardner School intentionally moved away from traditional school website aesthetics in favor of a more modern, visually adventurous experience. Inspired more by editorial and interactive brand design than conventional academic websites, the site combined bold typography, cinematic scrolling, motion design, layered storytelling, and playful doodle-inspired visuals to reflect the creativity and curiosity of the HGS culture.
Template Customization
To maximize the budget while still achieving a highly custom result, we explored a range of premium Webflow templates as creative starting points. The client ultimately selected the Warp template due to its modern structure, smooth transitions, and flexibility for animation and storytelling.
From there, the experience was heavily customized through refined typography, color palette exploration, hand-drawn visual accents, and enhanced motion throughout the site, creating an energetic and engaging user experience without overwhelming the design.

The Interactive Map Experience
The centerpiece of the new website for The Howard Gardner School became an interactive map experience designed to bring the school’s experiential learning philosophy to life. Rather than simply talking about exploration and learning beyond the classroom, the map visually demonstrates it through real student experiences and field trips.
Users can interact with location markers throughout the map to explore trips, view photography tied to learning experiences, and gain a deeper understanding of how education at HGS extends far beyond a traditional classroom environment. The feature adds a strong layer of engagement and discovery to the site while reinforcing the adventurous and curiosity-driven culture of the school.
The map quickly became one of the most powerful storytelling elements within the experience because it immediately communicates how different HGS is from a traditional educational model. Instead of simply describing experiential learning, the website allows visitors to actively explore and experience it for themselves.

Managing a Large Visual Content Library
To support the highly visual nature of the website, The Howard Gardner School provided more than 900 photographs documenting student life, field trips, and school culture. Our team consolidated and curated the library, selecting imagery that best supported the flow of the experience while optimizing files for performance across devices.
The imagery was strategically integrated throughout the site to reinforce key storytelling moments and showcase the authenticity of the HGS experience, creating a visually rich website without compromising speed or usability.
The Outcome
The finished website successfully transformed the online perception of HGS from a small alternative school into a vibrant, modern educational experience.
The new site:
Feels emotionally engaging and memorable
Reflects the true culture and energy of the school
Differentiates HGS from competing schools in the region
Creates curiosity and encourages direct inquiry
Supports the school’s future-focused philosophy
Provides a highly visual, immersive browsing experience
Maintains ease of use and low backend maintenance for staff
Most importantly, the website no longer feels like an institution.
It feels like an adventure.
